University-Bound Students
Heading to a University Program? Start Here
Many university aviation programs ask incoming students to already hold a Private Pilot Certificate, and most universities train in Cessna aircraft. While our fleet is primarily Piper aircraft, we also fly a Cessna 182 Skylane, so you can earn your certificate in the same type of aircraft you'll fly on campus.

Flight School or University: Common Questions

Yes. Private, instrument, commercial, and instructor certificates are FAA certificates, and every applicant takes the same practical test against the same FAA standards, whether they trained at a flight school or a university.

Part 141 schools train under an FAA-approved course with set stages and records. Part 61 training lets an instructor adapt the syllabus and schedule to each student. Many university programs use Part 141. Summit Flight Academy trains under Part 61. Our Part 61 vs Part 141 guide covers the details.

It depends mostly on how often you fly. At a flight school, your pace is set by your own schedule. Our private pilot packages run from about 3 to 4 months flying five or six days a week to 9 to 10 months flying once or twice a week. A university program follows its own calendar.

Yes. Many students earn their private pilot certificate with us during high school or before starting a university program, and others train with us while working on a degree elsewhere. We also partner with Purdue Global, so you can work toward an online aviation degree while you train.
