Cross-Country Flight FAQ

What is considered a cross-country flight for FAA requirements?

For a Private Pilot Certificate, a cross-country flight must include a landing at a point more than 50 nautical miles straight-line distance from the original point of departure.

How do I plan for fuel on a long cross-country flight?

Your instructor will teach you to calculate fuel burn for climb, cruise, and descent, and to always land with a safe reserve. For VFR flight, FAA regulations require enough fuel to fly to your first point of intended landing and then for an additional 30 minutes (day) or 45 minutes (night).

Can I do these flights solo?

Yes! As part of your training, you will complete solo cross-country flights after your instructor has endorsed you. These flights are a major milestone and a huge confidence builder.

How does weather affect cross-country planning?
